「日本人サックス奏者による物語・映像を喚起する1枚」
'54年生まれの大分のサックス奏者・山内桂のソロ作。かつてデレク・ベイリーらの来日公演の主催もした人だが、今回のCDはインプロヴィゼーションではないソプラニーノ・サックスの独演で、自身撮影の写真が彩るジャケット内側に書かれているように "光をもとめてモリをさまよい遊ぶ" 散策をイメージする趣だ。
「モリ」という曲がオープニングの、4曲ずつでゆっくりと4編の小物語を描いていくような作りだが、コンパクトな曲で構成していて聴きやすい。高音域のサウンドがたいへん小気味よく鳴り、ほのぼのと飄々と、時にユーモラスな佇まいで哀愁も滲む。シンプルゆえにさりげなくアヴァンギャルドにも聞こえる演奏だが、メロディアスかつエモーショナル。やさしい音色ながら力強くパーカッシヴでもあり、ヒーリングものとは一線を画す生命力を感じる響きだ。
映画を手掛けるアーティストだけに映像を喚起させる音作りも見事な、約43分16曲入り。

「モリ」を聴いた。自然を思わせる音だった。彼の撮った水や木々の写真から伺える風景は、この人の中の深いところにいつもあるものの一部なんだろうなと思う。頑張って聴こうとしなくても、音があちらから手を伸ばしてこちらにやってきてくれる。理解とかそういうところを超えて、伸びやかな音が自由に宙を舞い、オーロラのようにその場を包み込んでいくような感覚。そしてただそこに、あるべくしてあり、動くべくして動き、静まるべくして静まる。不思議な世界だけど、とても親密な世界だと思う。心の一番深いところにあってなかなか開かない扉が自然に開けられ、その奥底にある音さえ聴こえさせてくれる気がする。一人なのに、でも絶対に孤独にならない音楽。多分、彼が見た緑や、水やその動きや反映や、朝や夜の光や、色々な形の生命力、、、そういうものを少しずつ分けてもらっているような、そんなアルバム。

This is the first time I hear a release with pieces for a sopranino solo. I haven’t heard the name Katsura Yamauchi. Apparently, he’s been playing the sax since the seventies and has been active as an organizer of concerts in Japan. Even better, he played with Derek Bailey, Han Bennink and the who’s who of the Japanese impro scene, Toshinori Kondo, for example. The aesthetics of this release is one of simplicity and confidence. The sopranino is especially hard to play in tune, even harder than the soprano sax. The pieces depict nature made into sound. Salmo (Salmon in Japanese) is the most technologically advanced piece here, with cascading waterfall runs, the type preferred by salmon to go up against in mating season. Apart from this one, the pieces are not that technically challenging, keeping the notes in tune is a different story, of course. Irrawaddy is named after the river running through Myanmar. The melody consists of long notes with faster runs in between, with silences between them. Silence is essential throughout as many melodic lines are repeated many times but with each a very slightly different length. That’s the minimalistic approach of Yamauchi. Some might find this boring. To me, it’s a mesmerizing and relaxing way of listening to music. The last piece Uzo (named after the Greek alcoholic drink, I think), is almost folklike in its simplicity and, therefore, quite an earworm. As stated earlier, this isn’t pyrotechnics on sopranino but lovely music that is a refreshing take on minimalism with ma, a Japanese concept of meaningful silence between the notes. Now, where did I put my soprano sax? Also, this isn’t his first solo album. The last one was recorded 15 years ago. I might track that one down as well.

オリジナル曲をシンプルに謳う「サガイン」
〜静かに深く、そして躍動する音たち〜
Japanese alto sax player Katsura Yamauchi is a unique figure in the Japanese experimental, avant-garde scene. He comes from the industrial town Beppu, far from the traditional creative centers in the bigger cities of Japan. He picked up the saxophone in the early seventies while he was in his early twenties, but only in 2002 he quit his day job and dedicated himself fully to music. He has developed a highly original approach, investigating his instrument’s nuanced sonic properties as a vehicle for transforming and mutating breaths and spare blows.
The duo Aki, with guitarist Akinori Yamasaki, often a trio with bass player Hirotoshi Yonemasu, performs Yamauchi’s original compositions, focusing on sounds moving back and forth in the pulse of time and space. Saging is the debut album of Aki, recorded in December 2018 after Yamauchi and Yamasaki completed tours in Taiwan and Japan. Yamauchi also photographed and designed the cover art.
The music of Aki moves in clear, modest, melodic lines, creating its very personal sonic universe that explores how the minimalist gestures spread gently and patiently in space, but it is devoid of sentimentalism. The interplay of Yamauchi and Yamasaki sounds totally intuitive, growing and branching naturally and finds its own melodic core in its unhurried pace. The addition of Yonemasu on three pieces adds a subtle rhythmic layer.
This kind of music certainly has some therapeutic values in our troubled times.

「アキ」の音楽は明瞭で控えめなメロディーラインで動き、ミニマリストのジェスチャーが空間にどのように優しく忍耐強く広がっていくかを探求する非常に個人的な音の世界を作り出していますが、感傷的な要素はありません。 山内と山崎昭典のインタープレイは完全に直感的に聞こえ、自然に成長し分岐し、そのゆったりとしたペースの中に独自のメロディーの核を見つけます。 3曲に米増博俊が参加することで、微妙なリズミカルなレイヤーが追加されます。
この種の音楽は、困難な時代において確かに治療的な価値を持っています。

山内桂さんとの出会いは、2010年に三重県立美術館の「ひろがるアート」展の一環で〈息〉をテーマにした催しで、それぞれのソロ演奏と共演とレクチャーをした時でした。 その時の学芸員と今は亡き藤島寛さん(心理学教授)が企画され、かれが当時ベタ惚れだった山内さんを迎えられたことと記憶しています。ぼくはその時海外で「磐笛」を失くしたばかりで、偶然人からいただいた「函石の笛」を吹奏したのですが、10分間ほどで息切れてしまったけれど、山内さんたるや延々とミニマル手法のサックスを吹いてたのが共にYouTubeにあげられていて聴くことが出来ます。
「AKI」は僭越ながらこれまで知らなかった山内さんの音楽に触れることが出来ました。兎に角息の修験者としての先入観を持っていましたから・・・
山崎昭典さんとの出会いは宇都宮泰さんが開催されていた高貴寺ライブの折だったですネ。あの時のダイナミック・ギターは 実に耳新しい音でした。 その後丹後に移住してからは、ギターというポピュラーな楽器を現代にどう生かすかということを課題にしてたのでしたネ。ぼくは昭典さんの演奏に接する度に〈強靭な爪〉を密かに観察してきたわけですが、そこにも音の修験者を認めるものです。だから二人は天の引き合わせ〈必然〉であったと思っています。
二人から生まれ出る安心感のあるサウンドに包まれる時。幸せを感じます。 これからも息長く世界を浄化していっていただけるよう切に願います。

リスボンの想い出。出会った３人の集中したレコーディングは夜を徹して行われ、音たちは空気に溶けていった。それらはアルバム「3 Rushes」に結実した。残りの音たちの輝きの残像が陽の目を見ることになり、このアルバムはリリースされることになった。

This is a duet with Danish guitarist, sound collage explorer and designer of sonic installments Martin Vognsen, who created the series of recordings State Changes According To A Wind (Jvtlandt, 2009). The music is, again, minimalist but this time serene, and both Yamauchi and Vognesen focus on exploring the common, distinct characters of their instruments.
The five deeply focused, abstract, almost transparent improvisations emphasize the alto saxophone's sonic properties as a vehicle for manipulating minor, detailed changes within streamed breaths and air. Whether plucked or bowed, the sonic palette of Vognsen's dobro adds tiny, metallic, percussive and often resonating colors, as well as basic drone and ambient sounds.
The highly reserved and almost silent interplay creates enigmatic and surprisingly beautiful melodic soundscapes on the almost cinematic "Two Is Enough," with its precise, feather-light pulsations. "Koma" introduces a soft, resonating sonic canvas, abstracted with bold, abrupt fragments of melodic lines consolidated on the closing "Chatime," this time structured with a fractured East Asian-tinged theme.
This recording offer fascinating journey within delicate forms of sound and time.

"Katsura Yamauchi made a name for himself about ten years ago with the solo saxophone album, Salmo Sax, which established him as a leading figure among saxophonists involved in that period's reductionist movement (Doneda, Bosetti, Denzler, etc.). There, we heard his very personal practice of playing in a stream near his home, immersing himself like a salmon swimming up river. That image colors my perception of this reemergence alongside Ernesto Rodrigues, who plays harp here, and Carlos Santos, on electronic synthesis. These two run the irreplaceable record label, Creative Sources (200 titles in its catalog!). The harp leaves a welcome space here, allowing an almost visual balance among the three musicians and their "floating music." Carlos Santos' iridescent and volatile sounds curl like networks of lines and signs on the surface of an imaginary stream that eddies among the stems of stylized branches evoked by Ernesto Rodrigues' limping, trickling harp. In this context, Katsura Yamauchi's weightless blowing takes on a new specificity. His manner of stripping and slowing the dynamics of his multiphonics will fascinate connoisseurs of the alternative saxophone. All the same, the group has its jerky moments. An anemic life slips in like a dream in a bare gallery hung here and there with familiar signs that resist understanding. But the musicians know how to bring character and a contained expressivity to the details of their improvisations at points where the listener's attention may begin to fade. Katsura Yamauchi, a sax player based in Oita, Kyushu, is a forceful presence on the music scene inside and outside Japan. Toshimaru Nakamura, who plays the no-input mixing board (using the feedback sounds from inside the mixer), has performed extensively in Japan and internationally, earning high acclaim in Europe and the U.S. This CD documents their duo improvisation in Beppu, Oita, on April 7, 2012. The playing starts quietly, then turns into a super-high-tension session in which the two bombard each other with unexpectedly furious sound. One 30-minute track.

この作品は初のライブCDで、その上従来のソロ演奏にサルモサックス・アンサンブル（sse）とワークシヨップの組み合わせという、記念的なものです。 sseは０８年リリースの自作曲集CD「祝子」によって開始しました。ここでは５名のアマチュア奏者に集まってもらい「半自動即興」（主観と他観、個と全を「偶然的に」並存させ、深い音楽的感動を体験するための平易なシステム）曲を中心に演奏しました。 世界の各地でサルモサックス・アンサンブル・ワークショップができたらと思います。(山内 桂)
This is the first live CD for me, and the memorial performance which including "salmosax ensemble" and the "workshop" not only solo set. I began the "salmosax ensemble" in 2008 by recording my CD "houri" that was made of my compositions. This time, five amateur players came to my workshop, and we played mainly "semi-automatic improvisation" (I made a easy system to experience musical deep impression, it makes subjectivity coexist with objectivity, one with all, etc. by chance.) pieces. 大分在住の山内桂の『祝子 "houri" salmosax ensemble』は、サックスの多重録音で仕上げた約５０分１８曲入り。宮崎県の山奥の祝子で録り、そこの渓流を彼自身が撮った２０ページ程のオールカラー写真集にCDを収めたパッケージにも、かの地に対する深い思いが感じられる。音の方は、祝子から吸収したエネルギーをフィードバックしたような力強くもデリケイトな響きだ。ふくらみがあり艶やかな音色が魅力的で、現代音楽風の曲もあるがプリミティヴな躍動感も十分。いい意味で漂白されぬ臭みが心地よく、包容力に満ちた音の流れに持っていかれる。

"かの地"大分から世界へと発信を続けるサックス・プレイヤー山内桂。今作は宮崎県祝子（ほうり）の自然をそのサックスの音で表現し、自身が得意とする即興演奏ではなくオーバーダビングにより精緻を極めた細工に。音数を極端に減らしバランスにこだわったそれは、山内と祝子の邂逅を昇華。ジャンルこそ違うが、どこかJan Jelinekの世界へ通ずるもの発見、つまり快作であって怪作。同封される水の写真集「houri」をパラパラとやりながら聴くと一層こだまする。大友良英が彼を絶賛した意味がわかる。

４年前突如現れたサックス奏者、山内桂は大友良英のプレゼンツで東京デビューを果たして渡欧、帰国して初のＣＤ、 「ＳＡＬＭＯ ＳＡＸ」をリリースした。それからミシェル・ドネダとのデュオＣＤ「白雨」(IMJ-528)は出したものの、３年半の 空白を経てサックスソロによる第二弾が完成した。 第一作が４８歳ながら脱サラ直後ゆえの瑞々しさにあふれた作品なら、今回の作品はヨーロッパや日本全国をひとり旅し、 ２００を超える演奏をしてきたことによる力強さと優しさにあふれたものと言えよう。 音楽であることと、サックスを演奏することを選択したところから出発した山内の音楽「サルモサックス」は、常に音の原点 への回帰を目指している。ｓａｌｍｏ（サケ）が母川に回帰するように。 遠い太古の記憶の音に耳を澄まし、今を生きる人々の身体や細胞への融和と浸透によるコミュニケーションする一見 抽象的でどこにもない音は、実はとても具象で、静かに波紋を広げ続けている。 一切楽器に細工せず、一切録音に加工をしていない本アルバムは刺激的で懐かしい。
*曲解説*
1. Patiruma (alto)／表題曲。日本最南端まで生息域を広げ、波照間島の浜辺で山内が初めて出した音たちは たちまち曲になった。
2. Yuk (alto)／４曲目と共に即興演奏。山内は即興では音を意図しない。イメージも持たず、身体を使いサックスから 出てくる音を待ち、出くわし、感じ、綱渡り的に展開していく。
3. Chikushi (sopranino)／筑紫の君の古墳でひらめいた調べ。
4. Appe (alto)／即興演奏
5. Hi, (alto)／鼓膜で聴くというより、振動と共鳴そのものを聴くシンプルでスリリングに気持ちよい曲。
6. Salmo (sopranino)／SALMO SAXのテーマソング。前作に続くが、今回は谷川の水中で演奏。

私は音楽評論家ではなく絵画というものの作家活動をしている。そして音楽好きな、一リスナーでもある。友人でもある自分が思うことを述べるのも次に寄る所以からだ。
「絵描きが恐れるのは子供たちだ。何しろ衝動的に発声し、痛いところを突かれる。美術評論家の言は参考にはなるが、かといって自分のスタイルを方向転換はしたくないものだ。」
無邪気に論評するつもりはないが、自分の好きなことにのみ没頭するその度合いが、彼の場合かなり深刻なのだ。サラリーマン時代も自分の趣味を優先できる職を選び、4年ほど前、収入の見通しもなくあっさりやめてしまう。永い間一人山を歩き、渓流をこよなく愛す。そんな時間が永かったのか、人との接触を避けるような作品作りをする。自然の営みのような人為感を消去した表現を探しているようにも感じる。後述するが、もし癒されると感じる人がいるとすればそれゆえかもしれない。
音楽的見地からは私にはあまり響いてこない。山内の象徴、サルモサックス・・・どんなサックスだろうか、鮭をイメージしているのか、考えれば混乱するだけだ。彼曰く何もないらしい！
以前の作品について”癒される”とか”詩情的”などの言葉を聞くが、なるほど聴き手が深く瞑想するほど前者については響いてくる。独自性の強い作品のためある程度こちらから入って行く必要がある。集中を余儀なくされる。
かなり概念的なアートを目の当たりにしているような感じだ。まったく何に突き動かされてこんなことを表現しつづけてきたのか、右脳をチクリと刺される。聴覚情報を細大漏らさず収集し、彼の一挙一動を瞼にビジュアル化しようと努めるが、難しい。だがその静かだが膨大な情念のエネルギーに感動を覚える。聴き始めてみると地味だが、結構面白いではないか。個人的にはアルトの作品が面白く、前作「サルモサックス」もそうだが、ソプラニーノとアルトの作品は別アルバムにして欲しい気がする。また生演奏を一度目にしている方がイメージしやすい。
サルモサックス2と題されたこのアルバムで、山内桂が追い求める風景の先にある何かが見え隠れする。私は彼のこの仕事を音と呼んでいたが、今回それも疑問に思えてきた。そのダイレクトな身体的表現は、アートの枠にまで広げてもいいのではないか。アルトの場合ほとんどが微細な音量レベルのため、キーのパコパコ音や息継ぎ音などもしたたかに利用しているのではないかとさえ思う。微細とはいえ、管を流れる空気の流量はかなり多く、音の裏返り現象やブレス音の切なさは、今後さらなる表現域へと究まって行くのではないか。上品に言えば枯れた表現の世界へ。自分の好きなことを最優先に、大事にしてきた者でしか成し得ないことがある。楽曲的な修練より生々しい自己投影を重視する、コンテンポラリーなアートの域でのみ成立する表現ではないか。
最後にもう一度。自分のやりたいことをやるひた向きさが独自性を生み出す。渓流釣りが好きでヤマメが好きで、その同じ水流に胸まで浸かってまで一緒になりたいサキソフォニストなのである。

1954年生まれ、九州大分在住のサックス奏者、山内桂は2002年に脱サラし、その後は音楽活動に専念。2003年より毎年ヨーロッパを訪れてはフランス、ドイツ、オランダ、スイスなどの地元ミュージシャンとの交流を深める。その過程でフランスを代表する即興演奏家、ソプラノ / ソプラニーノ・サックス奏者のミッシェル・ドネダ（山内とは同年齢）と出会い意気投合し、幾度となく共演を重ねてきた。ふたりとも一切メロディアスなフレーズを演奏に取り込まず、終始、音の響きを追究するタイプのサックス奏者であり、このCDでも一貫してその線に沿った斬新かつ緊迫したサウンド構成に徹している。2004年フランスで録音した全5曲収録。2006年2月にはドネダが来日し、国内4カ所でデュオ・コンサートをおこなっている。

"I like nature. I like music," says Katsura Yamauchi in the handwritten sleevenote to his first solo album. Sounds uncontroversial enough, except that saxophone improvising is traditionally a highly urban, indoor pursuit, and maybe Yamauchi's fondness for fresh air and the outdoor life (his record label is called Salmo Fishing Association) is part of the secret behind his original take on free improvisation. The opening "Sa1mo" is an unhurried exploration of a tumbling phrase on sopranino, repeated and modified, It evokes flowing water, or possibly a salmon's leap, and Yamauchi closes his a1bum with a secondversion, recorded standing up to his waist in a Japanese river near a small waterfall. There is a tradition of shakuhachi players practising by a waterfall. Another slight link with Japanese flute repertoire is his habit of building a piece from a very limited selection of melodic phrases and sounds. "Implessions of Ams" works away at a melancholy tune on soprano-lyrical, spacious, Yamauchi has all the time in the world. "Kapuri!" patiently weaves a strand from long, husky alto sounds, keys clapping shut the notes. "Onchorhynchus Otomo" pays homage to Otomo Yoshihide by associating him with an important family of salmon. This eerie, deep humming, pushing at unstable overtones on the baritone, is like a rhapsody of air in plumbing, but the regular patterns mean it's also a tune, Yamauchi uniquely plays free Improv you can sing along with. 50th is year, Yamauchi has spent his life in remote cities in west Japan, organising the odd concert for visitors like Milford Graves or Derek Bailey, and struggling to hold down a full time company job while playing music. A few years ago he gave up the job and took off impulsively for a trip round Europe, playing alongside Otomo. Always with a keen ear for an original voice, Otomo rates him highly, writing, "He is really both a new and veteran artist. I am greatly refreshed by his energetic and confident performance."

Katsura, Suddenly Coming to Europe and Unexpectedly Talking Part in My Stage in Belgium and Being Applauded by All the Audience ! What a Surprise ! It was on that occasion when I realized for the first time that he was far from a naive and middle-aged musician. We should not be deceived by his appearance of fishing a stream. Katsura Yamauchi, who lives in Oita, has sent me a CD. Being an office-worker for over 20 years, he is a 48 years-old saxophonist, and has enjoyed composing unique music of his own without belonging to any music circles. Last autumn suddenly, he quitted his job. Though he is already known to us as a highly competent musician, he has lived his own life far and different from a city life. He takes no practical needs whatever into his account. To be true, I was much worried about his decision. He came abroad without regard to my worry, after giving several live performances in Tokyo. He is the musician living in such a regional city as Oita who has challenges an mprovised music of the world with his sharply critical mind. He is really both a new and a veteran artist who takes a detached view of the distance between his music and the actual world. Only two months later, he released his first CD album of a perfect sax solo. I am certain that he recorded them just after returning to Oita in Japan. I am greatly refreshed by his energetic and confident performance. In the present situation of music, a free improvisation music seems to have established its various standard forms. But I'd like to emphasize strongly that Yamauchi stands a loof from such a tendency.July 2003

大分の山内さんからＣＤが届いた。いわゆる音楽のシーンとはまったく無縁な場所で、サラリーマンをやりながら２０年以上にわたって、誰にも似ていない独特の音楽を淡々と作ってきた４８歳のサックス奏者、山内さんが突然仕事をやめたのが昨年秋。 すでに知る人ぞ知る的な音楽家であったとはいえ、なにぶん音楽の世界どころか都会の生活にも免疫のない人だ。正直心配した。ところが、こちらの心配をよそに、かれは東京で何本かライブをやった後、なんのあてもないのに唐突に渡欧。なんとベルギーでは私のステージに飛び入りし、満場の聴衆から大喝采を浴びているではないか。この時私は、この人がただの素朴でピュアな中年芸術家なんかじゃないのを確信した。まるで渓流釣りでもしてそうな外見にだまされてはいけない。この人はこれまでも、大分の地から世界の即興音楽に対して鋭い批判精神をもって勝負を挑み続けていたのだ。新人であって老練、自分の音楽と現実世界の距離を明確に見据えた確信犯なのだ。あれからわずか２か月、今度は完全なサックスソロによる初のＣＤアルバムリリース。帰国後、大分に戻ってすぐに録音したに違いない。その勢いと自信に満ちた演奏はすがすがしくもある。即興音楽の語法のようなものが固定し、こうすればいい演奏になる…というような基準のようなものがいくつも出来上がってしまった現状で、かれのやっていることがそうした即興スタンダードとは無縁のものであることも特記しておきたい。アルバム 「サルモ サックス」について
